Women’s Basketball Falls to Hopkins in Hard-Fought Battle

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College women's basketball team fell to No. 11 Johns Hopkins University, 78-65, on Thursday night.

The nationally-ranked Blue Jays remained unbeaten in Centennial Conference play after a tough battle from the Garnet. Swarthmore led after the opening quarter, where it shot a remarkable 60-percent from the field. The Garnet also led for the majority of the second stanza until Hopkins pulled ahead in the final minutes. The Blue Jays maintained their lead for the entire second half as they built a double-digit cushion in the fourth quarter.

Dana Bandurick and Neve Yair led the Garnet with 13 points, respectively. Yair was excellent from the field - shooting 6-of-8 with one three-pointer to go along with four rebounds and four assists. Alyssa Hayashi also scored in double figures with 10 points for the Garnet.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Swarthmore led early with a 6-2 run to open play. Hayashi contributed the team's opening two buckets, while Bandurick closed out the opening run with a layup. After the Blue Jays knotted the game at 13-13, the Garnet regained the lead with consecutive buckets from Norah Wingfield and Yair with 2:51 left. Swarthmore held its lead for the rest of the quarter with a one-point advantage, 18-17.

- Bandurick scored the first four points of the second quarter for Swarthmore to increase their lead to three points. The Garnet maintained their lead for the majority of the stanza as they led by as many as four points. Johns Hopkins later made up ground in the final three minutes as it ended the half on a 9-2 run to pull ahead by five points, 35-30.

- The Blue Jays rallied for six-unanswered points in the opening two minutes of the third quarter, which prompted the Garnet to burn an early timeout. Out of the timeout, Bandurick split a pair of free throws, while she and Wingfield added buckets to pull within eight points. After another basket from Bandurick, Katelyn Becker connected from three to trim their deficit to five points with 4:27 left. The Blue Jays built their lead back to double-digits, while Anna Hansson cashed in a beautiful pass from Hayashi to pull within 10 points at the end of the third, 55-45.

- Both teams traded long balls early in the fourth quarter with Carly Murphy connecting from deep for Swarthmore. Later in the stanza, Hayashi cashed in on an and-one opportunity after fighting through heavy contact off a pass from Bandurick. However, Hopkins maintained a double-digit lead for the remainder of the game as it held off a resiliant Garnet squad.
