Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Falls Short of Thrilling Comeback versus Johns Hopkins

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College men's basketball team came up just short in a back-and-forth thriller versus Johns Hopkins University, 69-65, in a rematch of last season's Centennial Championship on Thursday night.

The game came down to the wire in a classic showdown between the two Centennial powerhouses. With the Garnet trailing by 10 points with 1:04 left in regulation, Swarthmore nearly pulled off the impossible with a 9-1 run to come within two points. However, the Garnet fell just short of a remarkable comeback as Hopkins cashed in on a pair of late free throws to seal the victory.

Vinny DeAngelo knocked down crucial shots late in the game as he scored a team-high 23 points in the second half for Swarthmore. Michael Caprise carried the Garnet early with 16 points and 12 rebounds, while Aidan Godfrey also has a big night with his second-straight 10-point effort. The junior knocked down three triples, including a pivotal corner three in the final minute of play.

The Garnet showcased their physicality with a 15-5 advantage on the offensive glass. Caleb Aurelien helped lead the effort with six offensive boards, while Cal Hanson added three rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Caprise and Godfrey knocked down early triples to take a three-point advantage, 8-5. The Blue Jays quickly took the lead and built their advantage to five points until the Garnet tied the game on a Caprise jumper and Hanson three with 10:53 left.

- Caprise found a cutting Hanson with a beautiful bounce pass through traffic to put Swarthmore ahead with 8:33 remaining. The Blue Jays then responded with an 8-2 run to end the half with a five-point advantage, 26-21. Both teams struggled from the field in the opening half with Swarthmore narrowly edging out the Blue Jays with a 31.0 shooting percentage. Free throws were the difference maker in the opening stanza with Hopkins going 4-of-6 from the charity stripe, while Swarthmore did not attempt a free throw.

- DeAngelo began to hit up in the second with the opening four points for the Garnet. The Blue Jays eventually built their lead back to a game-high five points before Caprise added another three to pull within two points, 32-30. Godfrey then connected on his second three-pointer to bring Swarthmore within a point at the 13:44 mark. However, the Blue Jays began to distance themselves with a 14-4 run to bring their lead to double-digits for the first time, 50-39.

- Hanson provided a much-needed triple out of a Swarthmore timeout to shrink the team's deficit to single-digits with 8:34 left. The Garnet then pulled within six points after a pair of DeAngelo free throws, 50-44. Hopkins built its lead back to double-digits until DeAngelo provided Swarthmore with late momentum after connecting on an and-one layup with 1:47 left. After a pair of Hopkins free throws, the senior then buried a triple on the team's following possession to shrink their deficit to six points.

- The Blue Jays maintained their success from the free throw line as they connected on another pair to expand their lead to eight points. Godfrey then kept Swarthmore alive with a corner three, before splitting at the line on the team's following possession. After gaining the offensive rebound off Godfrey's missed free throw, DeAngelo nailed a three from the same corner to make it a three-point margin with 31 seconds left.

- Following a Hopkins' split at the line, DeAngelo added a quick layup to bring Swarthmore's deficit to two points. However, the Blue Jays connected on both their free throws to seal the game with five seconds left.
