Swarthmore Athletics Adds Three Full-Time Assistant Coaches

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College Department of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation is proud to announce the addition of three full-time assistant coaches to the Garnet staff.

Kathy Krannebitter has been promoted to full-time associate head women's lacrosse coach, while Shane Loeffler was elevated to full-time associate head men's basketball coach. The Garnet have also hired Kristen Johnson as a full-time assistant volleyball coach.

Krannebitter has played an essential role in the women's lacrosse program since joining the staff in 2012. She arrived at Swarthmore after a very successful 26-year career in which she coached both field hockey and lacrosse for 12 seasons at West Chester University. Krannebitter led the Rams women's lacrosse team to eight-straight Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships and an ECAC Championship. She was the PSAC Coach of the Year twice and the IWLCA Division II Coach of the Year in 1987.

This spring, Krannebitter helped guide Swarthmore to their fifth-straight winning season. The Garnet tallied a 10-6 record with a perfect 7-0 non-conference slate. The team holds a 89-73 overall record since Krannebitter joined the staff and has made two Centennial Conference Tournament appearances.

Loeffler has been a member of the men's basketball coaching staff since 2017. During his five seasons on the Swarthmore bench, the Garnet have posted a 132-21 overall record as they've established themselves as one of the elite programs in Division III. Men's basketball has made it to the NCAA Tournament in all five of those seasons, while earning a pair of Final Four appearances and capturing two Centennial Conference Championships. Swarthmore was also ranked No 1 in the nation with a 28-1 overall record before the 2020 NCAA Tournament was canceled due to the pandemic.

A 2016 graduate of Swarthmore College with a degree in political science, Loeffler played point guard for four seasons with the Garnet. A team captain his senior season, Loeffler helped lead the team to a then program-best 22-8 record and an appearance in the Centennial Conference Championship game.

Johnson joins the volleyball coaching staff after spending five seasons as the head women's volleyball coach at Gwynedd Mercy. Johnson guided the Griffins to their first postseason appearance in a dozen years with an Atlantic East Conference Championship Tournament berth in 2019. The program then made it back to the tournament twice with back-to-back appearances in 2021 and 2022.

In addition to her coaching resume, Johnson possesses a wealth of experience as a student-athlete. A 2010 graduate of Hope College, Johnson led the Flying Dutch to two Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Championships and three NCAA Division III Tournament appearances. As a senior, Johnson was named the MIAA Defensive Player of the Year and garnered an all-region honorable mention selection.

Johnson joins a women's volleyball program that won 17 games last season and went 9-1 in conference play. The Garnet made their first NCAA Tournament appearance since advancing to the Elite Eight in 2017.
