HAVERFORD, PA. - Competing in their final game of the regular season, the No. 17 Swarthmore men's lacrosse team took down Haverford College by a score of 14-13 on Saturday, Apr. 29.
Offensively, the Garnet were helmed by junior
Von Mabbs, with reigning Centennial Offensive player of the week notching five points on four goals and one assist.
Defensively, Swarthmore saw a stellar game out of first year
Ryan Pretzer, as the goalkeeper tallied 11 saves while facing down 42 shots.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet struck first, taking a 1-0 lead just 35 seconds into play off of a laser from first year
Jackson Brosgol.
- The Fords responded handily however, going on a 4-0 run to go up 4-1 over Swarthmore. While goals from
Von Mabbs and Brosgol got the Garnet back within one, a Ford score to end the quarter put Swarthmore down 5-3.
- The Garnet opened up the second quarter with another quick goal, with first year
Nolan Ohrman finding the back of the net just 46 seconds into the period.
- Both squads traded a pair of scores to close out the first half, with
Von Mabbs and Brosgol finding paydirt once again. As the horn sounded, the Garnet trailed by one at 7-6.
- Haverford opened the second half with two strikes, increasing their lead to three. While the Fords would score twice more in the third quarter, increasing their total to 11, the Garnet would respond with four of their own, as goals from
Von Mabbs, Ohrman and first year
Clay Almgren brought Swarthmore within one at 11-10 heading into the fourth.
- A goal early in the final period from sophomore
Cooper Bucklan leveled the contest 11-all, before a missile from sophomore
Danny Lowe gave Swarthmore their first lead since the opening quarter at 12-11.
- While Haverford would level the playing field once again at 12-all, first year
Ryder Maston recorded his first career score as a member of the Garnet to open the game back up at 13-12 in Swarthmore's favor. That margin would not hold however, as Haverford tied the game with just over a minute to play, forcing overtime.
- As they have all season, the Garnet proved lethal in extra time, needing just 39 seconds to find the back of the net. Catching a pass from first year
Rex Mabbs, Ohrman slammed the ball past the keeper, securing Swarthmore's 14-13 victory.
