LANCASTER, PA. - Playing in their final doubleheader of the regular season, the Swarthmore softball team downed Franklin & Marshall College on Thursday, Apr. 27, taking game one 7-3 and game two 6-5.
Offensively, Swarthmore were helmed by senior
Kate Hart. Putting up a monster performance in her final regular season outing as a member of the Garnet, Hart notched an insane stat line of three hits, two runs and six RBIs in game one, including two home runs.
From the circle, Swarthmore saw an excellent game one from sophomore
Emily Bertrand, as the righty allowed just two hits and two earned runs over six innings pitched, while also tallying four strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED - Game One (W, 7-3)
- Swarthmore drew first blood in the top of the first, taking a 1-0 lead over the Diplomats. After doubling to left field and advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt, first year
Iris Barone crossed home off of a single from junior
Alexandra Simon, securing the Garnet's first score of the game.
- The Garnet extended their advantage in the third, seeing a towering Hart home run to left field bring in Bertrand and sophomore
Olivia McClammy, putting Swarthmore up 4-0.
- F&M was finally able to answer in the bottom of the third, tallying three runs to cut the Garnet's lead to one at 4-3.
- Swarthmore rebounded quickly in the top of the fourth, stretching their lead back out to 5-3 as a Hart single drew in McClammy.
- While both squads were held scoreless through the next one and a half innings, the Garnet finally put the game away for good in the sixth. After smashing a double to center field, McClammy was powered home by yet another Hart homer, her second of the contest. Hart's shot stretched Swarthmore's already comfortable lead out to 7-3, a deficit that F&M could not overcome.

Cassidy Cheong, evening the score at 1-all.
- F&M recaptured their advantage in the bottom of the inning, going up 3-1.
- Undeterred however, Swarthmore caught fire in the top of the fourth. With runners on the corners and just one out, first year
Avery McClure doubled to right center field, driving in both Hart and McClammy to tie the game at 3-all. Not satisfied with simply being level, McClure scored on a fielding error and junior
Caterina Reed crossed home on a Cheong single, giving the Garnet their first lead of the game at 5-3.
- Swarthmore extended their advantage in the sixth, with first year
Rae Barron coming in on a groundout from Barone for the Garnet's sixth run.
- While two Diplomat runs in the bottom of the seventh closed Swarthmore's margin to just one, F&M's comeback ultimately fell short, as the Garnet escaped with a 6-5 victory and series sweep.
