Excellent Defense Propels Garnet to Gettysburg Sweep

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College softball team swept Gettysburg College to open Centennial Conference play on Saturday afternoon.

The Garnet took the opening game, 2-0, behind excellent pitching and even better defense. Molly O'Sullivan pitched the best game of her career in a complete game shutout as she surrendered just three hits and did not allow a walk. Swarthmore also helped out their pitcher with two double plays and several incredible highlights in the field.

Swarthmore's stellar defense carried into game two as they turned two more double plays. Alexandra Simon had an unbelievable day in the field as she made countless highlight-reel plays at shortstop. Simon also added two hits and a pair of RBI at the plate to contribute to the sweep.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Garnet scraped two unearned runs across in the first inning. Swarthmore plated the first run on a throwing error and then added another tally on a wild pitch. Simon recorded the only hit of the inning with an infield single, 2-0.

- O'Sullivan rolled through the second inning with a 1-2-3 frame. The junior opened the inning with a swinging strikeout as she had the Gettysburg hitter completely fooled with an off-speed pitch. O'Sullivan then navigated out of a jam in the third inning after allowing a leadoff double. Simon helped end the inning with an outstanding throw across the diamond on a sharply-hit grounder to the left side.

- The Garnet defense stepped up again in the fourth inning. Iris Barone and Flannery McFadden made a couple great reads on line drives, while Simon made another fantastic play and throw at shortstop to steal an out.

- McClammy made an outstanding diving catch in left field for the first out in the sixth inning. O'Sullivan then manufactured a ground ball back to the circle to strand a base runner at second.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Barone lined a hard-hit ball into center field for a leadoff single and then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt in the first inning. Simon then smoked a liner up the middle to score Barone from second base, 1-0.

- Swarthmore wandered into some trouble in the second inning after walking the bases loaded. However, Sarah Schab successfully walked the tightrope as she induced a fly ball to escape the jam.

- The Garnet built on their lead in the third inning. Emily Bertrand singled in the first run with a liner to right field to score McClammy from second. Brooke Coneeny then brought home another run on a fielder's choice, while Swarthmore plated two more on an error and a passed ball, 5-0.

- The Bullets threatened in the fourth inning, but Swarthmore's defense turned their third double play of the afternoon. McClure fielded a grounder, touched second base on her own and fired a strike to first base to turn two to end the inning.

- After surrendering one run in the fifth, Simon made an incredible backhanded grab with runners on the corners to turn the team's fourth double play of the afternoon to end the inning.

- Bertrand opened the bottom of the fifth with a double in the right-center field gap. Grace Taylor then followed with a bullet up the middle to bring home the team's sixth run. McFadden worked a deep count and singled in a run, while Simon smacked a single off the second base bag to add another insurance run. Olivia McClammy proceeded to end the game with an RBI double to expand the team's lead to eight runs, 9-1.
