Alpern Leads the Way Past Ramapo Behind Plenty of Offense

MAHWAH, NJ - The Swarthmore College baseball team put up double-digit runs for the fourth time in their past five games as they cruised to a 12-0 victory at Ramapo College on Friday night.

Liam Alpern put together another strong start for the Garnet as he picked up his first career win. The sophomore struck out a career-high nine batters and allowed just three hits in a scoreless six innings. Alex Schoessler, Andrew Moy and Ethan Weiss also tossed scoreless innings to complete the shutout.

Austin Burgess and Matthew Silvestre both had three-RBI performances to lead the offense. Burgess reached base four times with three hits and a walk, while Silvestre had two hits and a walk. As a team, the Garnet tallied 14 hits and worked 10 walks.

First-year Aidan Sullivan continued to showcase his power at the top of Swarthmore's lineup with a pair of doubles and two walks. Sullivan has recorded an extra base hit in five-straight games with four doubles and two home runs during the stretch.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet took advantage of a one-out Burgess walk in the first inning. Sullivan reached base on a fielder's choice in the next at bat and then scored on a Silvestre two-out double to right field, 1-0.

- Alpern struck out the final two batters swinging after allowing a pair to reach base in the bottom half of the first inning. Swarthmore pulled further ahead with a three-run second inning. After recording two quick outs, Benjamin Buchman worked a walk to prolong the inning and then advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch. Jett Shue plated Buchman with a single through the right side, while Max Roffwarg singled to shortstop to continue the rally. The Garnet then added two more runs as Shue and Roffwarg executed a double steal and then came around to score on a two-run single by Burgess, 4-0.

- The Garnet kept adding insurance runs with three more in the fourth inning. Sullivan doubled to right-center field to open the frame, while Silverstre and Joe Radek worked walks to load the bases with one out. Kirk Terada-Herzer then brought in a pair with a single through the right side, while Radek swiped home on a double steal to tally another run, 7-0.

- Alpern worked his way out of another one-out jam in the bottom of the fourth. The sophomore stranded two runners in scoring position with a strikeout and ground out to silence the threat. The Garnet offense rewarded Alpern in the next half inning with an RBI double from Sullivan to increase the lead, 8-0.

- Alpern coasted through a 1-2-3 sixth inning to wrap up his line for the afternoon. He struck out the lead off hitter for his ninth of the afternoon and then induced an inning-ending double play after allowing his only walk of the afternoon.

- Swarthmore added a pair of runs in the seventh and eighth innings to increase their lead to 12 runs. Silvestre brought home two runs with a single in the seventh, while Shue and Burgess brought home a run with a pair of singles to left field, 12-0.
