SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Playing in their first home doubleheader of the 2023 season, the Swarthmore softball team fell in both games to Eastern University on Thursday, Mar. 16, dropping the first 6-5 and the second 4-3.
In game number one, the Garnet were captained offensively by sophomore
Olivia McClammy, with the power-hitter putting up two hits, an RBI and a run on top of her first home run of the season.
The second game saw a stellar performance from first year
Lane Barron, with the Maine native allowing just one hit and recording a strikeout across 1.1 innings pitched.
HOW IT HAPPENED - Game 1, L (6-5)
- The Garnet struck first in the bottom of the first, taking an early 2-0 lead over the Eagles. Junior
Flannery McFadden reached home from third off a wild pitch for Swarthmore's first run, immediately followed by an absolute bomb of a home run from McClammy in the next at bat for their second.
- However, Eastern would strike back, notching two runs of their own in the top of the second to tie the game at 2-all.
- Swarthmore would regain their lead in the bottom of the second, loading the bases and then bringing junior
Caterina Reed home following a walk from first year
Iris Barone, putting the Garnet up 3-2.
- Staying neck and neck with Swarthmore, the Eagles responded to kick off the third, tying the game once again at 3-all.
- Eastern would take their first lead of the contest in the fourth, going up 4-3.
- The Garnet would seize back their advantage in the fifth at 5-4, with Barone reaching home off of a single from senior
Cassidy Cheong, and senior
Brooke Coneeny crossing the bag off of a line drive from sophomore
Emily Bertrand.
- The Eagles would tie the game up at 5-all in the top of the sixth, and with neither team able to score in the seventh, the Garnet's home opener headed to overtime.
- Eastern went up 6-5 off a wild pitch. In the bottom of the eighth, the Garnet were inches away from tying the game up once again before Bertrand was tagged out at home, closing out Swarthmore's 6-5 loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED - Game 2, L (4-3)
- Eastern took an early lead in the top of the first, going up 1-0. They would extend that advantage to two before the Garnet responded in the bottom of the second, tying the game up at 2-all off of scores from junior
Molly O'Sullivan and Cheong.
- Unable to stave off the Eagle bats however, Swarthmore surrendered two more runs in the top of the third, going down 4-2.
- While the Garnet closed their defecit to one at 4-3 in the bottom of the third, they were unable to score again over the next two innings. The game was ultimately called off due to darkness, with Swarthmore falling 4-3.
