Women’s Lacrosse Defense Leads the Way Over Widener, 8-6

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College women's lacrosse team bested Widener University, 8-6, to open the season with their second-straight victory on Saturday afternoon.

Swarthmore's defense helped seal the victory with a dominant second half as they locked down the Pride attack. Sofia Pelayo caused a game-high five turnovers with eight ground balls to headline a stellar defensive performance. Helen Stafford also added five saves on the contest.

Elizabeth Zack tallied a team-high three points with two goals and one assist to go along with four ground balls. Emma Holub and Francesca Richardson also had multiple goals with two, respectively. Isabela Bloomquist and Cassidy Marquis added the other Swarthmore goals.



HOW IT HAPPENED
- Holub picked up where she left off in the season opener with a goal to open the contest. The senior came from behind the net to beat the goalie three minutes into the game. Richardson added another score on a free position, while Bloomquist recorded the team's third-straight goal with 3:49 left. Widener collected a goal before the end of the opening stanza to pull within two scores, 3-1. 

- Zack started off the second with an early tally. Widener quickly answered with a goal of their own before rallying for two more unanswered-scores to tie the game, 4-4. Marquis regained the lead for Swarthmore with an assisted goal from Zack with 5:12 left. Holub then found the back of the net on a free position goal, but Widener answered with one more score before intermission, 6-5.

- Swarthmore gained separation as they shutout the Pride in the third stanza. Zack added another goal to open the half with 12:41 remaining. Richardson then added the team's second goal of the stanza on a free position attempt with a woman-up advantage. The Garnet defense dominated in the quarter as they locked up the Pride's offense to build an 8-5 lead.

- The Garnet outlasted the Pride in a defensive showdown to end the stanza. Widener scored the lone goal of the stanza with 3:59 left, which marked the defense's lone blemish of a stellar second half.
