Men’s Swimming Repeats as Centennial Champs, Karpenko Named Most Outstanding Swimmer

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - The Swarthmore College men's swimming team repeated as Centennial Conference Champions as they wrapped up the four-day championship meet on Sunday night. The Garnet dominated the field with 868.5 points to beat out Gettysburg College, who finished with a distant 775.5 points.

Andrew Karpenko defended his title of Most Outstanding Swimmer as he took home the conference's highest individual honor for the second-straight season. The junior earned gold medals in three individual events while setting one pool record, one conference record and earning four NCAA B cuts.



HOW IT HAPPENED
- Ben Freeman and Finn Conaway opened the night with silver and bronze in the 1650 freestyle. Freeman touched the wall at 16:06.70, while Conaway finished at 16:12.46. Both swimmers earned NCAA B cuts in the event. Freeman was phenomenal this weekend with a pair of individual gold medals to go along with his silver medal. 

- Jacob Sherman won bronze in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:50.83. Joey Lukner also qualified for the finals as he finished seventh with a 1:56.87 mark.

- AJ Das and Cole Griscavage claimed silver and bronze in the 100 freestyle. Das led the pair with a 46.02 mark, while Griscavage followed at 46.03. Ethan Marotte (46.12) and Benton Greenberg (46.61) also earned podium finishes as they took fifth and eighth, respectively. Vijay Chhabra fell just short of victory in the B Final as he took second in the heat.

- Karpenko successfully defended all three of his championships as he took gold in the 200 breaststroke with an NCAA B cut. After breaking his own conference, championship and program records in the prelims, Karpenko posted an even faster time with a 1:59.27 mark in the final session. Ben Wesley also placed in the event with a fifth place effort at 2:03.93 in the top finals.

- Sam Peterson and Dylan Ling were second and third in the 200 butterfly. Peterson touched the wall at 1:53.62, while Ling finished at 1:53.84. Ham Williams-Tracy (1:56.64) and Mats McGrath (1:57.68) rounded out the field with seventh and eighth place efforts, respectively. 

- The Garnet wrapped up the meet with a sweep in both heats of the 400 freestyle relay. Cami Wilson, Griscavage, Marotte and Das took the top final with a time of 3:01.79 to earn an NCAA B cut. The team of Wesley, Greenberg, Chhabra and Freeman also took the consolation final with a 3:04.29 mark.
