Women’s Basketball Drops Season Finale At Gettysburg

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Playing in their final game of the 2022-23 season, the Swarthmore women's baseball team fell to Gettysburg College on Saturday, Feb. 18th by a score of 61-43.

Offensively, the Garnet saw a double digit performance from sophomore Alyssa Hayashi, with the Maryland native tallying 11 points and two assists. Hayashi also shone on defense, putting up a stat line of four rebounds and two steals.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both squads kicked off the first quarter trading baskets and leads, with points from senior Dana Bandurick, first year Elise Fiore and sophomore Carolina Lopez proving enough to give the Garnet a 9-8 advantage seven minutes into the contest. While Gettysburg were able to pull away slightly over the subsequent minutes, a jumper from sophomore Katelyn Becker and a layup from first year Anna Hansson right before the end of the period cut the Garnet's deficit to just one at 15-14.

- Despite struggling to find the basket early in the second quarter, Swarthmore retook the lead four minutes into the period at 17-16 off of a layup from sophomore Norah Wingfield. However, the Garnet would not be able to keep up their offensive momentum, with the Bullets outscoring Swarthmore 13-5 throughout the rest of the half and securing a 29-22 advantage going into the break.

- A Bandurick jumper closed the Garnet's deficit to just five to kick off the third quarter, with layups from Fiore and Hansson keeping Swarthmore competitive. While the Bullets would pull away and lead by 10 seven minutes into the period, seven straight points from Hayashi followed up by a triple from senior Colleen Anderson powered the Garnet to within five going into the fourth at 43-38.

- The Garnet were not able to maintain their momentum however, scoring just five points in the fourth quarter to Gettysburg's 18, ultimately falling  61-43.

- With the loss, Swarthmore have been eliminated from Centennial Conference playoff contention, officially ending their season with a record of 11-14, 9-11 in conference play.
