GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Playing in the final regular season game of the 2022-23 season, the No. 9 Swarthmore men's basketball team fell to Gettysburg College on Saturday, Feb. 18th by a score of 78-65. The Garnet secured the No. 2 seed in the Centennial Championships.
The Garnet saw double digit performances from three players, with junior
Vinny DeAngelo, senior
George Corzine and senior
George Visconti putting up 20, 15 and 10 points respectively. Corzine also proved stout on the defensive end, tallying team leading marks of eight rebounds and three blocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Despite falling behind early on in the first half, a triple from first year
Cal Hanson got the Garnet right back into the thick of things, trailing by just one at 4-3 three minutes into the contest. While a layup from senior
Michael Caprise would give Swarthmore their first lead of the game, the Bullets quickly seized it back, outscoring the Garnet 17-8 over the next nine minutes to go up 21-13 with 7:57 left before the break.
- Down but not out, back to back Visconti triples ignited a run that saw the Garnet storm ahead, taking back the lead at 24-23 with 2:34 left to play. While both squads wrapped up the half exchanging baskets, Gettysburg were able to capture a slim advantage, going into the half up 32-30 on the Garnet.
- While a DeAngelo layup tied the contest at 32-all just 27 seconds into the second half, a subsequent 6-0 Gettysburg run gave the Bullets a 38-32 lead three minutes into the period. Not deterred however, buckets from senior
Colin Shaw and Deangelo tied the game once again, this time at 38-all.
- The Garnet were unable to keep up their offensive momentum throughout the rest of the match, as they were unable to respond once the Bullets went up 45-38 following an 8-0 run. While baskets from Caprice, Corzine and Deangelo kept Swarthmore competitive throughout the majority of the contest, they would never again retake the lead, only ever getting within five points of the Bullets and ultimately falling 78-65.
- The Garnet close out the regular season with a record of 22-3, 16-2 in conference play.
