Women’s Basketball Takes Down Washington, Hayashi Drops 19 Points

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College women's basketball team returned to the win column with a hard-fought victory over Washington College, 62-47, on Wednesday night.
 
Alyssa Hayashi led the way with 19 points to go along with four steals, two assists and two rebounds to pace the Garnet. The sophomore was joined in double figures by Dana Bandurick and Kim Kockenmeister, who tallied 14 and 13 points, respectively. Bandurick fell just short of a double-double with nine rebounds.
 
Kockenmeister and Hayashi both added three three-pointers on a hot shooting night for the Garnet behind the arc. Swarthmore was 40 percent from three-point range, while Washington shot just 8.3 percent.


 
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Hayashi gave the Garnet an early lead with a three-pointer at the 7:11 mark. Bandurick then followed with a layup to put Swarthmore ahead by five points. Washington took the lead late in the stanza before Bandurick gave the Garnet the advantage with another layup with 1:55 left. Both teams went into the second quarter tied at 13-13.
 
- Kockenmeister opened the second quarter with a three to regain the lead. Moments later, the senior added another triple to pull ahead by four points, 19-15. Hayashi connected from long range and Norah Wingfield added a layup to give the Garnet their largest lead of the half at seven points. The Shorewomen tightened things up before intermission as they cut their deficit to three points, 28-25.
 
- Hayashi opened the second half with a three-pointer, which was followed by buckets from Kockenmeister and Anna Hansson to take an eight-point lead. Swarthmore took its first double-digit lead on a Kockenmeister three to pull ahead by 11 points with 5:48 left. Washington made a late surge and pulled within six points heading into the final quarter, 57-41.
 
- The Garnet kept the Shorewomen at a distance as they controlled the final quarter of play. Carolina Lopez put the Garnet up by 10 points with a pair of free throws at the 1:57 mark. Hayashi then iced the game with four free throws in the final minute of play.
