No. 18 Field Hockey Falls to Johns Hopkins in Centennial Championship

BALTIMORE, MD - The No. 18 Swarthmore College field hockey team fell short against Johns Hopkins, 3-0, in the Centennial Conference Championship on Saturday afternoon. It marked the program's first championship appearance since 2000 as the team put together a historic run through the Centennial playoffs.

Sophia Hitchingham and Magdelana Jordan led the way for the offense with a pair of shots, respectively. The Garnet attack had its opportunities during the second and third quarters, but were unable to overcome Hopkins' advantage in time of possession.

Cassandra Conklin made a game-high five saves for the Garnet as she faced a 23-7 shots disadvantage. Hopkins also controlled a 17-5 advantage in corner attempts.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Defense led the way in the opening quarter as neither team registered a shot on goal. The Blue Jays held a 2-0 advantage in shots and corners, but were unable to generate a scoring threat as the Garnet limited traffic in front of the cage.

- Swarthmore fought off a pair of corners early in the second quarter as Conklin was forced to make her first save. Conklin made another save with her blocker, but the Blue Jays countered with a breakaway off a turnover to tally the game's first score in the 22nd minute. Hopkins shortly added another score despite an excellent effort from Conklin on a rip to the right post. The Garnet turned things around as they threatened late in the half with a pair of corners and two shots as they nearly trimmed their deficit in half. Swarthmore rallied for four shots in the final two minutes after being held without a shot to open the game.

- The Garnet fought off a trio corner attempts in the opening five minutes of the third quarter. Swarthmore allowed few opportunities for the Blue Jays as they registered just one non-competitive attempt off their three corners. Midway through the third, Katherine Kohn forced the goalie to make a challenging pad save, which resulted in a Swarthmore corner attempt. Deborah Kim recorded a shot off the corner, but had it blocked away. Neither team found the back of the cage in the stanza as Hopkins held a slim 4-2 shots advantage.

- The Blue Jays controlled possession early in the fourth quarter as they kept Swarthmore on the defensive end. Kohn helped generate a corner attempt for the Garnet after making a run at the cage. However, Anna Stancofski had her shot from center blocked off the corner. Hopkins then responded at the other end with its third score with just over three minutes left in regulation, 3-0.
