Men’s Soccer Bested in Centennial Quarterfinals

BALTIMORE - The Swarthmore College men's soccer team fell to fourth-seeded Johns Hopkins University, 4-0, in the Centennial Conference Quarterfinals on Tuesday night.

Both teams were evenly matched in shots with the Blue Jays holding a slim 14-12 advantage. Each team also attempted five corner kicks, while Hopkins held a narrow advantage in time of possession at 52-percent.

The Blue Jays took a one-goal advantage into halftime after scoring an early tally in the eighth minute. Johns Hopkins then added on in the second stanza with goals in the 57th, 67th and 88th minutes.

Joseph Eyiolowope led the Garnet with three shots, while Stathis Kalathias and Brandon Cramblit totaled a pair of shots, respectively.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Christian Bignotti made his first save in the seventh minute, before Hopkins added the game's first score in the following minute. The Garnet had their best attempt of the first half in the 29th minute when Eyiolowope fired a shot on goal. The sophomore charged his way into the box as he muscled past a Blue Jays defender, but was unable to beat the keeper to even the score.

- The Garnet fought off a couple chances early in the second half to keep the Blue Jays close. However, Hopkins added to their lead with another score in the 57th minute. Moments later, the Garnet tried to answer back with a shot from Shlok Kaul, but had the attempt saved.

- Johns Hopkins added another insurance goal in the 67th minute to distance themselves from the Garnet. Swarthmore responded with consecutive shots from Eyiolowope, but had the first attempt blocked away while the second-chance attempt was saved by the Blue Jays. Johns Hopkins later responded with their fourth goal in the 88th minute to secure their ticket to the semifinals.
