Women’s Basketball Falls to No. 23 Mary Washington in New Year Opener

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - The Swarthmore College women's basketball team returned to action for the first time in 30 days as they fell to No. 23 Mary Washington, 65-31, on Monday night. 

Kim Kockenmeister led the Garnet in scoring with eight points, while Norah Wingfield added seven points with six rebounds. Swarthmore kept things close in the opening half, but let the game get away from them in the third quarter. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Raven Richardson put an end to Mary Washington's 8-0 run with a layup at the 6:22 mark. Norah Wingfield and Harrison Anderson added buckets later in the quarter as the Eagles led the opening stanza, 13-7. 

- Kockenmeister gave the Garnet their first bucket of the quarter with a layup at the 7:04 mark. After the Eagles built their lead back to double digits, Kockenmeister drilled a three-pointer from the corner to pull within nine points. Kockenmeister then drilled her second deep ball of the quarter to notch her eighth point of the stanza. The Garnet trailed Mary Washington, 27-17, heading into halftime. 

- Richardson and Wingfield opened the third quarter with consecutive buckets to pull the Garnet within seven points. However, the Eagles responded with 16-straight points to take a 23 point lead with 2:38 remaining. Mary Washington closed out the third quarter with a 50-23 lead.

- Swarthmore was outscored 15-8 in the final quarter. Emily Smith and Elisa Fiore both added buckets in the quarter.
