SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Matching up against Centennial Rival No. 11 Johns Hopkins University, the No. 12 Swarthmore men's basketball team slew the Blue Jays 53-46 on Tuesday, Jan 10th.
Offensively, the Garnet were captained by a monstrous performance from first year
Cal Hanson. The guard put up career high marks in nearly every statistical category, tallying 16 points on 4-6 shooting from beyond the arc. On the defensive end, Swarthmore were anchored by junior
Michael Caprise, with the Virginia native posting two blocks and five rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In a defensive battle that proved to be the Garnet's lowest scoring outing of the season on both sides of the ball, Swarthmore drew first blood, taking a 3-0 lead just 20 seconds into the first half off of a triple from senior
Colin Shaw. While Johns Hopkins struck back, tying the game at 3-all, three made foul shots from junior
Vinny DeAngelo ignited a Garnet run, with a layup from senior
George Corzine and rare three-pointer from 6'6 Caprise giving Swarthmore an 11-5 lead with 14:08 left in the period.
- While Both squads struggled to find the basket over the next five minutes, back-to-back buckets from Visconti and Corzine broke the Garnet's slump and extended their lead to eight at 15-7. A jumper from Shaw grew that advantage to nine, but the Blue Jays roared back, tying the game at 17-all with less than two minutes. Not to be counted out however, a Hanson triple breathed new life back into the Garnet offense, spurring on a streak of baskets that sent Swarthmore into the half up 25-18.
- Hanson would carry that offensive success into the second half, opening up scoring for the Garnet and extending their margin to nine just 21 seconds into the period. However, the Blue Jays were resilient, rallying back to within one at 27-26 with 13:49 left to play.
- Back-to-back threes from Hanson proved a dagger in Hopkins' comeback hopes, breaking the Garnet's six minute scoring drought and denying the Blue Jays a chance at a lead that they would ultimately never recapture. While Hopkins would pull within as few as three points with five minutes left in the contest, smothering Garnet defense combined with offensive firepower from Visconti, Caprise, Hanson, and senior
TJ Chapman proved too much for the Blue Jays, as Swarthmore took down their nationally ranked foe 53-46.
- The Garnet are now 12-1, 6-0 in conference play.
