Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s Soccer Blanks Eastern 1-0, Earns Second Shutout Of The Season

ST. DAVIDS Pa. - Continuing their undefeated record on the road, the Swarthmore men's soccer team took down Eastern University on Tuesday, Sept. 20th by a score of 1-0.

Garnet's goal came from senior Bless Tumushabe and was one thirteen shots put up on the day by the Garnet. Defensively, Swarthmore shutout the Eagles, with senior goalkeeper Max Kral facing 13 shots and notching four saves.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-    In a back and forth first half in which both squads fought tooth and nail for possession, defense ruled the day as neither offense was able to find paydirt. The teams broke at the horn tied 0-0.
-    The Garnet defense effectively stifled an Eastern offense eager to prove themselves after a slow start to the season, holding the Eagles to just three shots and one corner in the first half.
-    While Swarthmore's offense did not find the back of the net throughout the first 45 minutes, they were not without their chances, as Tumushabe, junior Freddie Lin and junior Antonio Callegari all had excellent chances to score before being stymied by either the keeper or an Eastern defender throwing their body in front of the ball.
-    Finally capitalizing on a chance at goal just seven minutes into the second half, Tumushabe takes full advantage of a nice pass from sophomore Dean Chong to absolutely demolish a shot from outside the box, burying the ball into the upper netting and putting the Garnet up 1-0.
-    Both the Garnet's offense and defense continued to dominate throughout the second half. On the offensive side of the ball, on top of Tumushabe's goal, Swarthmore put up seven more shots, five of which were on goal, forcing some truly exceptional saves out of the Eastern Keeper. Defensively, Kral was a rock for the Garnet in goal, putting up three saves in the second half and securing Swarthmore's second cleansheet of the season.
-    Tumushabe's goal was all the scoring the Garnet needed to close out the Eagles, with Swarthmore escaping with a 1-0 win.
