SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Swarthmore College Softball, the top seed in the tournament, fell to fourth-seeded Gettysburg College in the opening round of the Centennial Conference Tournament, 3-1, on Tuesday afternoon.
Gwen Glatz led the way as the senior tallied a pair of extra base hits, while
Olivia McClammy and
Alexandra Simon added a base knock each.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-
Meg Ozawa sat the Bullets down in order during the top half of the first inning, as the lefty fanned the first two batters faced. After the first two batters got on, Ozawa got out of a jam in the top of the second with a pair of line outs and a strikeout.
Laura Hirai recorded the final out of the inning as the senior made a diving catch on a screaming line drive to second base.
- Glatz roped a double to deep left center field to lead off the bottom of the second and moved to third as McClammy singled for the Garnet. Glatz and McClammy were stranded on base as Paige Forry got
Kate Hart,
Sam Hastings and
Emily Bertrand to pop up.
- In the bottom of the fourth inning, Glatz went the opposite way for a triple down the right field line. The very next batter, McClammy, worked a walk to put runners on the corners. On the first pitch to Hart, McClammy forced a throw down to second base on a stolen base allowing Glatz to score on the double steal.
- Gettysburg would score two runs in the top of the fifth to take a 2-1 lead. Bases loaded and one out,
Maya Estrera made a diving catch in left field to save a few runs as the freshman threw the ball to third to double up the Bullets and end the inning.
