Roffwarg, Burgess Lead Baseball to Wild Win, Jbara Smashes Go-Ahead Homer in Eighth

ROCHESTER, NY – The Swarthmore College baseball team fought off elimination with a wild victory over the University of Rochester, 17-14, on Saturday afternoon. Nate Jbara provided the go-ahead score with a two-out, two-strike solo homer in the eighth inning.
 
Max Roffwarg had a career day at the plate with three doubles, seven RBI and two runs scored as the lead off hitter. Austin Burgess also continued his stellar postseason with four RBI on three hits – including his second home run of the NCAA Regionals.
 
Burgess extended his on-base streak to 31 games, while Luke Mutz added a pair of hits to expand on-base total to 27 games. Mutz has also gone seven-straight games with multiple hits.
 
Alexander Zimerman shut the door with a much-needed scoreless ninth inning to earn the save and advance the Garnet to game three of the regionals.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- After surrendering a pair of runs in the first, Jbara put the Garnet on the board with an RBI single. Burgess then gave Swarthmore its first lead with a two-run homer to left field in the third inning, 3-2.
 
-Emmet Reynolds opened a six-run fourth inning with a pinch-hit RBI single. Roffwarg busted the game open with a three-double to left-center field. Burgess then plated the freshman with a double to left and came home to score on a wild pitch. Michael Sepe carried momentum into the fifth inning with a solo home run to left field to take an eight-run advantage, 10-2.
 
- Rochester began to claw back into the game with a pair of runs in the sixth and seventh innings, respectively. The Garnet added one run in the sixth on a Paul Cooke bunt single, before Roffwarg drove home two more with a two-run double in the seventh. Burgess then capped off a three-run seventh inning with an RBI single, 14-6.
 
- After the Yellowjackets stunned the Garnet with an eight-run eighth inning to tie the ball game, Jbara delivered with a go-ahead, solo homer to take the lead. The junior drove a 3-2 pitch to deep left-center field to put Swarthmore ahead. Roffwarg then added a pair of insurance runs with a two-run double to give the bullpen some breathing room, 17-14.
 
- After allowing a lead-off single in the ninth, Rimerman settled in and struck out the following two batters. The freshman righty then escaped the inning with a ground out to avoid elimination.
