Baseball Shuts Out Haverford in Series Opener

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Swarthmore College baseball team opened its two-game conference series versus Haverford College with a 9-0 shutout on Tuesday afternoon.

Michael Sepe led the Garnet offense with three hits and four RBI - including a two-run home run. Paul Cooke also added a two-run shot with his fourth homer of the season, while Austin Burgess added a two-RBI performance with a pair of extra base hits. Burgess' last seven hits have been for extra bases. 

Four Garnet pitchers combined for a shutout victory. Jeremy Jensen and Rohan Cherukuri opened the game with two shutout innings, respectively. Zach Camp then added four shutout innings with seven strikeouts, while Andrew Moy shut the door with a perfect ninth inning.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Austin Burgess started a two-out rally with a triple to right-center field in the first inning. Sepe then brought the runner home with a single to left field on an 0-2 count.  

- Jeremy Jensen opened the game with two shutout innings for the Garnet. The freshman struck out two batters and allowed two hits. Rohan Cherukuri then added a scoreless two frames with three strikeouts.  

- Luke Mutz singled through the right side to reach base with one out in the third inning. Sepe then came through with another two-out RBI as he doubled to left field to plate Mutz, 2-0. 

- Swarthmore rallied for five insurance runs in the seventh inning. Andrew Olsen plated the first run with a single up the middle, while Burgess doubled home a pair of runs. Sepe then capped off the big inning with a two-run homer to left field. Cooke added two more runs in the eighth with a two-run homer to right field. 

- Camp tossed four more scoreless innings with seven strikeouts for his second-straight scoreless appearance. The senior has gone 7.1 innings without allowing a run. Moy also put together an impressive performance on the bump. The freshman struck out all three batters in the ninth inning.
