FULLERTON, Calif. - Swarthmore College Men's Tennis opened a west coast swing as they split a pair of matches against Hope International University and Chapman University on Monday in California. The Garnet dropped the opening match, 8-1, to the Royals from Hope. In the second match of the day, Swarthmore defeated Chapman, 5-4.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Against the Royals,
Graham Hadesman and
Minh Nguyen fell in the number one doubles position, 7-6. In the number two spot
Noah Criss and
Max Pogorelov earned a 6-3 decision.
- In singles action, Pogorelov fell 6-2, 6-3, while Hadesman stole a set as he fell 3-6, 6-2, 1-0.
Hellman Zhao also stole the first set in the number five position as he fell 3-6, 6-2, 1-0.
- The Garnet took a commanding 3-0 lead by sweeping doubles action.
Phil Rehwinkel and
Josiah Myers-Lipton got it started as the earned a 8-4 victory in number two doubles.
Charley Force and
Kevin Jiang added a point for Swarthmore as they finished with a victory in the number three position, 8-3. The doubles sweep was completed as
Grant Dill and
John Nichols-Daly won a hard fought 8-7 match in the top doubles spot.
- Chapman began to battle back by taking three of the first four singles finishes. In the number six singles position, Criss picked up a crucial point as he defeated Mac Caldwell, 6-4, 6-0. Myers-Lipton clinched the match for the Garnet in the number five position with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Julien Sanseverino.

The Garnet (5-1) return to the court on March 10th as they take on Cal Tech in Pasadena, Calif. The match is slated to begin at 11:00 p.m. PST (1:00 p.m. EST).
