SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College men's basketball team fell to Keene State, 84-83, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Michael Caprise led the team with 27 points and 13 rebounds on 12-of-17 shooting from the field.
George Visconti and
Vinny DeAngelo also scored in double figures with 18 and 17, respectively.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Swarthmore opened the game on a 9-4 run, which was capped off by a three-pointer from
Michael Caprise. Later in the half, Keene State tied the game with a three-pointer of their own with 11:37 remaining.
- Visconti drilled a three-pointer with 7:28 remaining to regain the lead for Swarthmore.
Conor Harkins then expanded the lead to five points with a layup, 30-25. However, the Owls battled back and took a one-point lead into halftime, 37-36.
- Both teams went back-and-forth to open the second half with neither team leading by more than four points.
George Corzine sparked a 7-0 run for the Garnet with a bucket at the 13:22 mark, which tied the game at 50-50. Caprise then added a bucket on the following possession, while Visconti hit from long range to pull ahead by five points. Moments later, the Owls countered with a 5-0 rally to tie the game again, 57-57.
- Keene State built its lead to as many as nine points with 2:19 remaining, 76-67.
Abass Sallah knocked down a big bucket for the Garnet on the following possession, while Caprise scored four-unanswered points to shrink their deficit to four points with a minute left.
- Harkins kept the Garnet hopes alive with a three-pointer to pull within two points with 28 seconds remaining. The Owls then built its lead back to two possession with a free throw with four seconds remaining. However, the Garnet kept battling as DeAngelo hit from three with one second remaining, 84-83. Keene State was able to inbound the ball and run out the clock to secure the victory.
