Baseball Bests Montclair State in Offensive Explosion

ABERDEEN, MD - The Swarthmore College baseball team defeated Montclair State, 14-5, in their 2022 season opener on Saturday morning. The Garnet blew the game open with seven runs in the eighth inning as they coasted to an impressive victory. 

George Briggs led the offense with three RBI on two hits, while Luke Mutz drove home two runners and hit 4-for-5 at he dish. Emmet Reynolds and Michael Sepe also contributed with two RBI on the day.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Reynolds and Briggs both singled home a run in the first inning to give the Garnet an early 2-0 cushion. Reynolds then tagged on another run with a sacrafice fly in the second inning, 3-0.

- Matthew Silvestre doubled home a run in the third and Sepe added another tally with a single to give the Garnet a 5-0 advantage. After Montclair got a run back in the bottom half of the fourth, Mutz immediately answered back with an RBI single in the fifth. Sepe then tripled home a runner in the sixth inning to expand the lead, 7-1.

- The Garnet put Montclair away with seven runs in the eighth inning. Briggs doubled home a pair to start the rally, while Paul Cooke plated Briggs with another double. Later in the inning, Mutz walked in a run before the Garnet plated three more with an infield single, an error and a sacrafice fly, 14-2.
