CARLISLE, PA. - Battling the No. 2 seeded Dickinson College for 110 minutes, the Swarthmore women's soccer team ultimately lost to the Red Devils by a score of 2-1 on Friday, Nov. 4th.
The Garnet's goal came in the 18th minute off the foot of senior
Alice Onyango-Opiyo, who notched her first goal of the conference playoffs and second of the season. Defensively, senior keeper
Lillian Keller tallied four saves on the night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet struck first just over 17 minutes into the match. After a hard foul on senior
Megan Ruoff gave Swarthmore a free kick just outside the box, Onyango-Opiyo crushed a shot into the upper left hand corner to give the Garnet a 1-0 lead.
- Swarthmore shut down the Dickinson offense through the first half, holding the Red Devils to just three shots. The Garnet went into the half up 1-0.
- While Keller kept her net clean through the first 72 minutes, the Red Devils equalized in minute 73, tying the match at 1-all.
- With neither squad able to score through the rest of regulation, the game went into overtime.
- Dickinson found their second goal of the night just four minutes into overtime, sneaking a shot past Keller to put the Red Devils up 2-1.
- The Garnet had their opportunities to equalize, with senior
Kim Kockenmeister having two chances that sailed just wide in the last five minutes of extra time. Ultimately however, Swarthmore could not find paydirt, falling to the Red Devils 2-1.
