Volleyball Falls to Babson in NCAA Opening Round

MEDFORD, Ma. – The Swarthmore College volleyball team dropped a hard-fought battle with Babson College, 3-0, in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday night.

Swarthmore has encountered adversity throughout their magical season, but continued to battle and compete until the end. After suffering a lopsided defeat in the opening set, the Garnet regrouped once more and challenged the Beavers with a tightly-contested second and third set.

Kaylee Zhang wraps up an incredible junior campaign with a team-high nine kills to go along with six digs. The junior made history this season by becoming the second player in program history to earn Centennial Player of the Year. Zhang was also awarded All-Region honors, announced earlier this afternoon by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.

Massachusetts native Ellie Streeper led the defense with 10 digs as she put a cap on an All-Centennial rookie campaign. Hannah Humphreys and Trisha Razdan also led the defense with two blocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- After surrendering the first two points of the opening set, Zhang got the Garnet back on track with a kill as they rallied for three-straight points to take the lead. Babson shortly regained the advantage and created separation with eight-straight points midway through the match, 17-8. Alexa Bartlett captured some late momentum with a kill, which sparked three-consecutive points, but the Garnet were unable to dig out of their deficit, 25-11.

- Swarthmore put the opening set behind them as they jumped out to a 5-2 advantage to open the second set. After the Beavers tied the game, the Garnet responded with consecutive kills from Zhang and Razdan to regain the lead, 10-8. Swarthmore led for much of the second set, but surrendered seven-straight points to drop the set, 25-20.

- The Beavers rallied for four-straight points to gain early separation over the Garnet, 10-6. Grace Hegland then sparked a Swarthmore rally with a kill, which was followed by a pair of aces from Angelina Heminway. The Garnet then put together a 9-3 run to take a five-point advantage over Babson. However, the Beavers responded with seven-straight points and sealed victory with a 9-1 run to close the set.
