SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Coming up short in the last match of the season, the Swarthmore field hockey team were defeated by Haverford College 1-0 on Saturday, Oct. 29th.
Â
A defensive struggle through and through, the Garnet held the Haverford offensive attack in check for the most part, turning away 15 shots, nine of which were on goal.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Â Â Â Â In a do or die game, both squads desperately needed the victory. If you won, you went to the Centennial Conference playoffs as the sixth seed. If you lost, that was the end of your season.Â
-Â Â Â Â Through the first four quarters, defenses ruled the day. Swarthmore kept the Ford offense in check, with first year keeper Cassandra Conklin notching seven saves in regulation, while the Garnet defense held the Haverford to 12 shots, only seven of which were on target.
-Â Â Â Â It took overtime for Haverford to overcome the stout Garnet defense, finally slipping the ball past Conklin in the 69th minute to secure the win.
-Â Â Â Â The Garnet were not without their chances to take the win for themselves, wracking up eight shots, one of which came in the overtime period.
-Â Â Â Â The Garnet end the season with a record of 9-8, 4-6 in conference play.Â
