No. 16 Garnet Holds Off Gettysburg in Road Contest

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - No. 16 Swarthmore College Men's Basketball knocked off Gettysburg College, 78-63, in a Centennial Conference road contest on Saturday afternoon. The Garnet improve to 14-1 and 8-0 in league play, while the Bullets drop to 8-5 and 4-3. 

The victory extends the win streak for the Garnet to 11 games, including 34 straight Centennial Conference games. Both teams were held scoreless until George Corzine put in a layup to give Swarthmore an opening bucket. Ryan Ingram followed with a jumper and Abass Sallah put home a fast break layup as the Garnet took an 11-4 lead early in the half. In the first three-plus minutes of action, Michael Caprise established dominance by grabbing four rebounds. Mid-way through the half, Mulvey and Conor Harkins knocked down back-to-back three points to give Swarthmore an 11-point advantage. The Bullets closed the gap and entered the half-time break with a five-point deficit.

In the second half, the Garnet went to the free throw line 19 times. The visitors made 17 of those free throws, including seven-of-eight in the final minute of action. At the 6:43 mark, George Visconti gave Swarthmore its largest lead of the afternoon at 24-points with a three-pointer. The Garnet scored 34-points in the paint, and received 13 points off the bench.

Caprise captured a career-high 16 rebounds and tallied 14 points for his second double-double of the year. Corzine added a game and career-high 19 points, while Visconti finished with 15 points. Harkins and Mulvey each added nine points. Ingram contributed with eight points, while Sallah added four points. 

The Garnet return to the court on Wednesday as they travel to Collegeville, Pa. to take on Ursinus College. Tip-off for the Centennial Conference game is set for 7:30 p.m. Spectators will be limited to only Ursinus students, faculty and staff for athletic competitions at this time.
