Sallie Leads Women's Basketball to Win Over Mules

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - T Sallie scored a career high in points as the guard led Swarthmore College Women's Basketball to a 57-49 victory over Muhlenberg College on Thursday evening at Tarble Pavilion.

The Garnet improve to 5-1 and 3-0 in Centennial Conference play, while the Mules fall to 3-3 and 1-2. Swarthmore is off to its best start in conference play since they went 3-0 during the 2012-13 season. Only two teams in the Centennial have a 3-0 conference record, the Garnet and Gettysburg College.

Both teams got off to a slow start offensively, but Muhlenberg scored first after a minute had eclipsed on the clock. After a missed Carolina Lopez three-pointer, Norah Wingfield got Swarthmore on the board. Winfield grabbed the offensive board, and immediately laid it up for a two-points. The Garnet were held to six points in the opening quarter as Alyssa Hayashi hit a pair of free throws and Sallie knocked down a jumper with 1:34 to play.

Trailing 13-6 after the opening stanza, Swarthmore turned the jets on by outscoring the Mules, 23-11 in the second. Sallie knocked down a three in the opening seconds of the quarter, and Dana Bandurick tallied a bucket a few seconds later as the tide turned in favor of the Garnet. Sallie added another bucket from distance to get the Garnet within a point with only two minutes played. In a crucial possession for the Mules, Wingfield blocked an Amanda Gorski shot and scored the fastbreak layup to give Swarthmore its first lead of the game at 19-18 with 6:10 left in the half. Bandurick and Sallie combined for 20 points in the second quarter as Swarthmore took a 33-24 advantage into the break.

Sallie finished the game with a career-high and game-high 18 points and added three rebounds, two assist and a steal. Bandurick added her second straight double-double with 14 points and 14 boards, twelve of which came on the defensive glass. Wingfield finished the game with a career-high ten points and eight rebounds, while Hayashi added eight points. Kim Kockenmeister added five points and four boards, while Lopez contributed four boards and two points.

The Garnet shot 88.9% from the free throw line, while the Mules shot only 40% from the charity line.

Swarthmore returns to the court on Saturday as they host conference-foe Dickinson College. Tip-off for the final game prior to the holiday break is set for 1:00 p.m.
