INDIANAPOLIS—Swarthmore College Men's Soccer's 2021 season will continue into the postseason after the Garnet received an at-large bid into the NCAA Division III tournament. The appearance is the ninth in program history and the second straight in as many seasons.
Swarthmore went 11-3-2 on the regular season and were the #4 seed in the Centennial Conference Tournament. The Garnet fell in overtime to eventual conference runner-up Gettysburg, 2-1 on Tuesday at Clothier Field Stadium. Swarthmore's resume was strong enough for the team to be considered by the NCAA selection committee for the at-large bid. Swarthmore was ranked sixth in Region V and had a 5-1-1 record out of conference.
The Garnet travel to the campus of Tufts University in Medford, Mass. and open the single-elimination tournament on Saturday against Steven Institute of Technology. The Stevens Ducks went 12-6-2 and knocked off Misericordia University, 4-2 in PKs, to win the MAC Freedom title. Kick-off is set for 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.
The winner of that game plays the winner of host Tufts and New England College on Sunday at 1pm. The Tufts Jumbos, ranked 7th nationally, posted a 13-1-2 record and shut out Connecticut College, 2-0, in the New England Small College Athletic Conference championship game. The New England College Pilgrims have a 9-6-2 and won the New England Collegiate Conference with a 3-1 victory of Eastern Nazarene.
Of the three possible opponents in the pod, Swarthmore has played Stevens and Tufts. The Garnet are 12-8-3 all-time against the Ducks with the Stevens taking the last match 5-0 on September 23rd, 2015. Swarthmore has only played the Jumbos once with Tufts taking a 4-0 decision on October 10th, 2002. Tufts is the two-time defending NCAA champion.
The Garnet are one of five teams from the Centennial Conference to earn a spot in the 2021 NCAA Division III Tournament. Five institutions representing the Centennial Conference in the NCAA Tournament is a record. The CC has twice previously sent four teams to the dance, in 2019 and 2007. The CC has earned at least three bids seven different times, and has now secured at least three spots in NCAA's five out of the last six seasons. Washington College (Md.) earned the automatic bid by winning the Centennial Conference Championship. Franklin & Marshall College, Johns Hopkins University and Gettysburg College will all participate in the NCAA Tournament.
