BALTIMORE, Md. – Swarthmore College Volleyball met Haverford College for the second straight year in the Centennial Conference Tournament on Saturday. The Garnet fell in three sets to the Fords (20-25, 23-25, 28-30).
The Fords took the first set 25-20 in a back and forth set battle between the two rivals. Haverford had a .229 hitting percentage, but tallied seven service errors. The Garnet recorded three service aces with
Grace Hegland,
Sierra Tyson and
Jordan Perry all tallying an ace in the opening set.
Swarthmore came out of the second set firing as they opened with an 8-2 lead before the Fords called a timeout. Haverford battled to tie the set at 14 points each, and the rest of the set was an exchange of points. Trailing 22-19, Hegland and
Trisha Razdan forced Haverford attacker Jadyn Elliott into an attacking error. Haverford took the second frame 25-23, setting up for an exciting third set.
In the third set, the Garnet notched the first two points. Tied at 21, Razdan and Hegland assisted on a block to give the Garnet a slight lead. Setting up for the block the pair forced Dina Kosyagin into an attacking error. With the Fords serving at 24-24, the two teams exchanged in a nice rally, but Hegland knocked the ball down for the kill. Swarthmore didn't go down without a fight as the teams exchanged points as they battled in another marathon third set. The Fords took the third set 30-28.
Chloe Mayhue led the Garnet with eight kills, while Perry and Razdan finished with five kills.
Dani Pena finished the match with 22 assists, while Tyson added 17 digs, an ace and an assist.
The Garnet fall to 13-8, while the Fords improve 23-4. Swarthmore concludes the 2021 campaign with a .619 win percentage.
