BALTIMORE, Md. - Swarthmore College Field Hockey fell top-seeded and nationally ranked No. 2 Johns Hopkins University in the semifinal round of the Centennial Conference Tournament on Friday afternoon.
The fourth-seeded Garnet took an early lead as senior
Chelsea Semper tipped the ball in on the left side of the net. In the 11th minute, Semper inserted the ball to
Samantha Meacock at the top of the circle who hit it back to Semper for her fifth goal of the season.
Swarthmore's defense stood tall in the second quarter as the Blue Jays recorded seven shots in the frame, with
Aron Lankford stopping five of those shots. In the 27th minute, Emily Amsden scored the equalizer on a penalty stroke.
In a back and forth contest, the Garnet earned two penalty corners mid-way though the final frame. Tessa Erickson's late goal in the 56th minute lifted the Blue Jays to a 2-1 victory.
Meacock and
Martina Kampel recorded a pair of shots each, while
Katherine Kohn talled a shot for the Garnet. Lankford tallied 12 saves in the net for the Garnet, while
Emily Hapgood added a defensive save.
Today's match was the first time the two schools met in the Centennial Conference Tournament since 2000, which was the first time the tournament was played. The Garnet fall to 13-6, while the Blue Jays improve to 18-0. Swarthmore's 13 victories during the 2021 campaign were the most since the Garnet reached the Centennial Conference Finals in 2000. The 2021 campaign also is the first time Swarthmore had a record above .500 since they finished the 2006 season with a 9-8 record.
