Men's Soccer Drops NCAA First Round Match to Stevens

MEDFORD, Mass. - Swarthmore College Men's Soccer fell in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament to Stevens Tech on Saturday at Tufts University. 

The Garnet battled the MAC Freedom champions in a hard fought match but fell to the Ducks, 1-0. Swarthmore wrapped up the 2021 campaign with an 11-5-2 record and its ninth NCAA appearance in program history. 

After an hour and forty minute weather delay, Jay Poskitt netted the game-winner for the Ducks in the 89th minute of play. The Garnet finished the game with six shots and fended off ten shots from the Ducks with seven of them coming in the first half. Max Kral tallied a pair of saves in 90 minutes of action in the net. 

Mid-way through the first half, Charley Ward had a dangerous opportunity as his shot went off the right post. As time wa coming to a close in the first half, Leo Hecht lined up for Swarthmore's first corner of the game. Antonio Callegari collected the ball off the corner, and the sophomore's shot was blocked. 

In the 62nd minute, Ward fired shot but the seniors attempt was stopped by Aedan Boriotti. Ward led the Garnet with four shots, while Callegari and Bless Tumushabe each tallied one shot.

Only five corners were awarded in the game, with the Garnet having the slight 3-2 advantage. 

Swarthmore's journey came to an unfortunate end, but the team finished with an 11-5-2 record. The Garnet were ranked No. 16 in the preseason and No. 24 on two separate occasions. Four members of the team earned All-Centennial accolades.
