SWARTHMORE, Pa. - For the first time since the Centennial Conference was formed, Swarthmore College will have all four of its teams competing in the conference postseason tournament. Field hockey and men's soccer both will serve as fourth seeds, while women's soccer and volleyball will serve as the third seed in their respective tournaments.
Field hockey is competing in the Centennial Conference playoffs for the first time since 2000, while men's soccer (2015), women's soccer (2018) and volleyball (2019) return to postseason play.
Field Hockey hosts rival Haverford College in the opening round of the Centennial Conference playoffs on Tuesday, November 2nd at 4:30 pm. The Garnet earned the fourth seed with a 2-1 victory over the No. 17 Fords on Saturday. In the all-time series, the Garnet hold a slight edge over the Fords 27-22-1, with the teams exchanging victories in the last three meetings. The last-time the Garnet played in the Centennial Conference playoffs as they advanced to the finals by knocking off Washington College (Md.), 2-0. Swarthmore fell to Johns Hopkins University in the championship game, 1-0. Hopkins (1), Ursinus (2) and Dickinson (3) round out the rest of the tournament field. Men's soccer hosts Gettysburg College in the opening round of the Centennial Conference playoffs on Tuesday, November 2nd at 7:00 p.m. The Garnet will serve as the fourth seed and host the fifth seeded Bullets at Clothier Field for the second time in the 2021 campaign. Swarthmore took the first match 2-1 back on September 25th. This will be the first time that the Garnet and Bullets meet in Centennial postseason action, but second time overall. When both teams competed in the Middle Atlantic Conference, Swarthmore won the MAC Southern Division with a 3-1 victory on November 6th, 1985. Johns Hopkins University (1), Washington College (Md.) Women's soccer will travel to take on second-seeded McDaniel College on Friday, November 5th at 2:30 p.m in the Centennial Conference semi-finals. Back on October 2nd, the Garnet fell to then undefeated and #10 nationally ranked, McDaniel, 2-1. In their last meeting in the Centennial playoffs, the Garnet advanced to the 2018 Centennial Conference Finals with a 5-2 victory over the Green Terror. Johns Hopkins University (1), Gettysburg College (4) and Franklin & Marshall College round out the field competing in the conference tournament. Volleyball will take on Haverford in the semifinal of the Centennial Conference tournament on Saturday, November 6th at 3:30 pm in Baltimore, Md. Swarthmore fell to Haverford in their last meeting on Saturday, which decided the seeding for the tournament. The Garnet and Fords have a history of meeting in the Centennial Conference postseason. In 2019, Swarthmore traveled to take on fourth seeded Haverford in the opening round of the tournament. The Garnet advanced to the semis that year as they defeated their rival, 3-1, in the opening round.
