Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

No. 1 Garnet Fall At Buzzer In Championship

SWARTHMORE, Pa.--No. 1 Swarthmore College Men's Basketball had its 26-game win streak come to an end on Saturday night at the buzzer against No. 8 Johns Hopkins University. The game had all the trappings of a must-watch championship game, but didn't end in Swarthmore's favor.

The Garnet had already beaten Hopkins twice this season, but the old adage about how hard it is to beat a team thrice in a season came true on Saturday night as Swarthmore (26-1) experienced its first loss of the season, 73-71.

Hopkins guard Conner Delaney pulled up from the elbow and knocked down the jumper as the clock hit zero to take the game. Delaney finished with 32 points on 12-of-24 shooting and earned Centennial Conference Tournament MVP honors. No one other player scored in double digits for the Blue Jays.

Swarthmore freshman point guard Vinny DeAngelo countered with a superb performance of his own. DeAngelo's ended with 23 points while shooting 7-of-10 from the floor and 7-of-8 from the free-throw line.  Forward Nate Shafer dominated inside, scoring 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting while grabbing 13 rebounds, blocking three shots and dealing out three assists. Shafer moved to 994 points for his career.

George Visconti posted 14 points and four rebounds. Zac O'Dell tallied nine points. Conor Harkins sank two first-half 3-pointers and is now at 998 points for his career.
Both teams had the lead for 17 minutes and seven seconds, and the largest lead that either team built was five. Swarthmore out-shot Hopkins from the floor slightly, 50 percent to 49.1 percent, and finished with a 32-22 rebound advantage. Both teams committed just seven turnovers in the action. The biggest difference statistically came in the 3-point category as Hopkins went 13-of-28 (46.4 percent) while Swarthmore went 6-of-18 (33.3 percent).

A jumper by DeAngelo evened the game at 71-71 with 1:36 to play. The Garnet got a stop on the other end and ran off 30 seconds on the offensive end but couldn't get the go-ahead shot to fall. With the shot clock unplugged, Hopkins held for the last shot and buried it to take the title.

The Garnet now look forward to the NCAA Tournament. Time and location of the first round of the NCAA Tournament will be announced during Monday's 12:30 p.m. selection show.
