CARLISLE, Pa. – Swarthmore College Women's Basketball saw the 2019-20 campaign come to an end after Dickinson College defeated the Garnet in the Centennial Conference Tournament on Tuesday night.
The Red Devils earned a 59-49 decision in the first round of the postseason tournament and improved to 3-0 on the season against the Garnet.
Swarthmore falls to 13-13, while the Red Devils improve to 16-10. The Garnet fall to 0-2 all-time against the Red Devils in the Centennial Conference Tournament. The last time the two programs met was on February 26th, 2005 when Dickinson defeated Swarthmore, 67-42.
The Garnet and Red Devils battled to combine for 23 points in the first quarter. Swarthmore held the three point edge after ten minutes of play.
Dickinson regained lead to head into the halftime with a 27-20 advantage. Out of the break, Swarthmore cut the lead to one point on free throws by
Elizabeth Stiles and a jumper by
Kendall Tribus. Mid-way through the third quarter, the Garnet took a one point lead with a made free throw by
Kim Kockenmeister. The sophomore guard knocked down a triple with 2:39 remaining in the third frame as Swarthmore extended its lead by four points. The Garnet took the 40-36 advantage into the fourth quarter.
Kockenmeister and
Erin Cronin led the Garnet with 14 points each. Kockenmeister finished the game with five rebounds, three steals and three assist in 31 minutes of action. Stiles contributed six points, while Tribus and
Christina Holmgren added four points each. Stiles knocked down all four free throws attempted in the contest.
Tribus grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds, while contributing with a block and an assist.
The 2019-20 season is the first year in which both the Garnet women's and men's programs have competed in the Centennial Conference Tournament in same academic year.
Swarthmore wraps up the season with at least a .500 record for the first time since the Garnet finished 13-11 in the 2013-14 campaign. The 2019-20 campaign marks the seventh appearance for the Garnet in the Centennial Conference Tournament, with the last being in 2013.
