Garnet Sweep Wesley In Season Opening Series

DOVER, Del. – In its first action of 2020, Swarthmore College Softball swept Wesley College on Sunday.
 
GAME ONE: Swarthmore 10, Wesley 8
Sophomore Gwen Glatz opened the scoring with an RBI double to left field in the top of the first inning. Mika Maenaga, who reached base after getting hit by a pitch, scored on the hit by Glatz. The Garnet added another run as Kalli Segel knocked home Gabriella Natoli on a single to center field.
 
In the third inning, Swarthmore's offense scored six runs as the Garnet increased the lead to 9-0. Natoli, Maenaga, Cassidy Cheong, Sam Hastings, and Laura Hirai recorded RBIs in the third frame. The RBI single by Cheong to score Meg Ozawa was also the first-years first collegiate hit.
 
Segel added an insurance run with a solo home run in the top of the sixth inning. The senior finished the game 3-of-4 from the plate with two runs batted in.
 
Lucy Decker earned the win after 6.1 innings of work on the mound. The senior recorded two strikeouts, two walks, and 11 hits against the Wolverines.
 
GAME TWO: Swarthmore 9, Wesley 8
The Garnet wasted no time lighting the scoreboard as Glatz added her second double of the day in the first inning to score Natoli. Wesley (3-3) added a pair of runs to take a 2-1 advantage in the bottom half of the first inning.
 
Glatz came around to score in the fourth inning as Victoria Overbeck roped a single to left field. The junior crossed the plate as Hastings' recorded her first collegiate hit with a two-run RBI double to center field as Swarthmore gained a 4-2 lead.
 
Trailing by one run entering the top of the seventh inning, Cheong notched her first collegiate hit in a huge spot for the Garnet. The freshman knocked in Segel and Glatz to give Swarthmore an 9-8.
 
Glatz, who finished 4-of-5 from the plate, earned the victory on the mound. The sophomore scored three times and knocked in two runs.
 
Swarthmore (2-0) will return to action on March 3rd as they travel to Media, Pa. to take on Penn State Brandywine. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 3:00 p.m.
