SWARTHMORE, Pa.—No. 24 Swarthmore College Women's Tennis fought off the No. 30 Christopher Newport University Captains 7-2 on Sunday afternoon in the Mullan Tennis Center.
Swarthmore improved to 3-1 on the young season with the win over the nationally-ranked Captains. While the Garnet won by a large margin, several singles matches were tightly contested.
In doubles play,
Emma Kassan and
Vivien Fernandez-Ravelo won in the second flight 8-4. In third doubles,
Jenny Lewis and
Sonia Varma won by the same count.
Elise Talley and
Christina Wang played a tight match in top doubles but fell 8-5.
In singles, the top three matches all went three sets. Kassan out-dueled CNU's top player 5-7, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4).
Varma struggled out of the gate in second doubles and fell 6-2 in the first set, but rallied to sweep the next two sets 6-0, 6-0.
In third singles, Lewis fell in the tiebreaker in the first set, but recovered and won the next two frames 6-4, 6-4.
Talley won fifth singles with a tie-breaker score of 7-4 and then dominated the second set 6-1.
With the match in hand,
Anna Miller won sixth singles 8-4.
The Garnet are next in action on spring break. Swarthmore plays at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on March 8.
