Men's Lacrosse Comeback Falls Short At Widener

CHESTER, Pa.—Swarthmore College Men's Lacrosse fielded a furious fourth-quarter comeback on the road at Widener University on Saturday, but ran out of time to complete the rally. The Garnet ultimately lost by a score of 11-9.

The Garnet found themselves behind the eight ball early on as Widener stormed out to a 6-0 advantage. Swarthmore finally broke through with 8:20 left in the second on a goal by Andrew Estella, assisted by Will Vespole. Vespole scored his first of two goals on the day with 18 seconds left in the second, a man-up tally off the feed from Zander Levitz. Sophomore Ben Schaeffer netted a pair of goals in the third quarter, but Swarthmore still trailed 10-4 going into the final period.

Scott Eberle opened up the final frame with an unassisted marker. Widener responded with a goal, and then Swarthmore began to make up ground on the resulting faceoff. Ryan Izquierdo grabbed the faceoff and dashed to the goal for his first score of the season. Izquierdo went 3-for-6 on the faceoff x. Will Bernstein led Swarthmore with a 4-for-6 effort in the middle.

Alec Ferry tagged a goal with 3:49 to play, Vespole netted his second of the night with 1:22 to go, and Levitz scored with 10 seconds remaining.

Frankie Dillon registered 13 saves in net for Swarthmore.

The Garnet (0-2) travel to New York for a road date with Vassar College on Saturday.
