CHESTERTOWN, Md.—A well-balanced scoring attack and a mighty second-half effort propelled No. 1 Swarthmore College Men's Basketball to its 18th straight win on Wednesday night at Washington College. The Garnet (18-0, 11-0 Centennial) took care of Washington College (6-12, 4-7 Centennial) 77-66.
Swarthmore trailed by five at halftime but sank the Shoremen with a 50-point surge in the second half. In the first meeting between these two teams in November, Swarthmore had trailed by eight points at the half before rallying to win. Swarthmore has only trailed a team at halftime one other time this year. This season, Swarthmore is scoring 37.9 points per first half and 42.2 points per second half.
All five starters scored at least 10 points as did reserve Colin Shaw. Vinny DeAngelo led Swarthmore with 15 points while shooting 6-of-7 from the floor. Nate Shafer hit 6-of-9 shots for 14 points and had six rebounds and three blocks to boot. Conor Harkins sank a season-high 10 free throws in a row after missing his first attempt and ended the night with 12 points.
Zac O'Dell only missed once from the floor, going 5-for-6 en route to an 11-point showing. He also blocked two shots and had two steals. George Visconti pitched in 10, and Colin Shaw finished with 13.
The Garnet shot a whopping 66.7 percent from the field in the second half, going 16-for-24. Swarthmore did yeoman's work from the free-throw line, sinking a season-high 25 shots on 32 attempts.
Swarthmore trailed by seven with 19:03 left in the contest before making a run. A dunk from O'Dell fired up the Garnet and triggered a 9-2 run. Swarthmore evened the count at 38-38 with 15:46 to play. After a layup and-one by O'Dell with 12 minutes to play, Swarthmore had command of the lead and never let it go. Washington pulled within two with 5:35 to go, but Swarthmore fought off the Shoremen advance.
Swarthmore gears up for a road date with Gettysburg College (11-7, 5-6 Centennial) on Saturday at 3 p.m. Should the Garnet win on Saturday, they will clinch a playoff berth with six games remaining.
