SWARTHMORE, Pa.--Swarthmore College Men's Soccer and the St. Mary's College of Maryland Seahawks entered Wednesday night's matchup both sporting 5-0 records. The teams wrestled for 110 minutes with the game ultimately ending in a 1-1 draw. A header from sophomore defender
Harry Nevins was the equalizer for Swarthmore in the 50th minute.
The visitors drew first blood in what was an entertaining, attack-heavy match. In the 39th minute, All-America forward Khalid Balogun poked in a loose ball after a scramble in front of the Garnet goal. It was Balogun's ninth goal in six matches for the undefeated Seahawks.
Five minutes into the second half, with Swarthmore pressing for the equalizer, the Garnet earned a corner on the right side of the field. Junior defender
Michael Gross drove in a sharp cross, and sophomore centerbackÂ
Harry Nevins hammered home a devastating header to level. It was Nevins' first career goal for the Garnet.
Both sides will be pleased with their performances, although each will feel they could have won it. St. Mary's had a sitter that went high over the bar and Swarthmore had a shot cleared off the St. Mary's line by what appeared to be a Seahawks defender's hand, but with no VAR, the ruling on the field stood.
The back and forth affair went to overtime, during which both teams created chances, but defenses held strong. St. Mary's had three consecutive corners in the second OT, but Swarthmore managed to clear each time. Junior midfielder
Charley Ward crushed a shot against the right post for Swarthmore, but the woodwork denied him the winner.
Swarthmore begin Centennial Conference play this Saturday, Sept. 21 as Dickinson visit Clothier Field Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
