SWARTHMORE, Pa.—Swarthmore College Volleyball split on the last day of the Swarthmore Invitational and went 3-1 on its home court this weekend. The Garnet fell to the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons to open the day but were dominant against the University of Redlands Bulldogs in the nightcap.
Swarthmore 0, Cortland 3 (23-25, 24-26, 23-25)
Every set was tightly contested in the first game of the twin-billing. The first set was a defensive battle as Cortland hit -.050 and Swarthmore hit .021. Libero Sarah Carrasco led Swarthmore with 18 digs. Sierra Tyson and Mehra den Braven both added 14 digs, and Chloe Mayhue pitched in 13 digs.
Isabelle Andrews had a ruthlessly efficiently match at the net, recording a .538 hitting percentage with a team-high eight kills. Tyson added seven kills while hitting .292. She also had 25 assists and four blocks.
Swarthmore 3, Redlands 0 (25-18, 25-10, 25-13)
The Garnet ran all over the Bulldogs in the second game of the day, hitting .350 for the match while holding Redlands to -.019.
Swarthmore started off on the wrong foot, falling behind 6-1 in the first set. With Tyson serving, the Garnet went on a 5-0 run to come within two points at 13-11. Swarthmore then went on a 9-2 run and closed out the set with four straight points to win the set.
The Garnet hit .407 with 12 kills in the second set, completely wiping out the Bulldogs. Swarthmore then hit .360 in the third set to claim the match in a brisk one hour and five minutes.
Den Braven swung at .524 for the match while laying down 12 kills. Mayhue added eight kills while hitting .350.
Tyson dealt out 16 assists and had a match-high 15 digs. Sarah Carrasco pitched in 12 digs.
Swarthmore improved to 7-4 on the year. The Garnet are back at home on Friday for the first Centennial Conference match of the year. Swarthmore hosts Dickinson at 8 p.m.
