Swarthmore Beats #7 Rowan, Levitt Reaches 200 Hits

SWARTHMORE, Pa.  - Swarthmore College Baseball took down the No. 7-ranked team in Division III on Saturday at Clothier Field. The Garnet (27-12) beat Rowan University (30-11) 3-1.

Swarthmore has now won eight straight games. The team's last five wins have come against opponents with a combined record of 148-58 (.720).

The Garnet will await Monday's selection show to learn whether or not they've received an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. They were ranked No. 11 in the Mid-Atlantic region before winning three games against teams with 30-plus wins. During Swarthmore's win streak, they've beaten two conference champions, three teams ranked ahead of them in the region and two teams ranked ahead of them nationally.

On Saturday, senior Charles Levitt became the first player in Swarthmore history to reach 200 career hits. He's just the 10th player in Centennial Conference history to reach that milestone.

The opener strategy worked wonders again for the Garnet. Swarthmore head coach Matt Midkiff opted to use freshman pitcher Zach Camp to start, and he pitched three innings of one-run baseball. Senior Ricky Conti took the mound as a reliever and showed why he was an All-American in 2018. He pitched five innings and struck out six without allowing a run.

Junior Jack Corkery pitched a hitless ninth and set Swarthmore's all-time saves record at 10, passing Ramsey Walker '13 on that list.

Down 1-0, the bats came alive for Swarthmore in the third inning. Junior Holden Bridge had an RBI single and Levitt had an RBI double to give their team a 2-1 lead.

Freshman Luke Mutz gave Swarthmore some breathing room with an RBI single in the fourth. Mutz had two hits and was the only Garnet player with a multi-hit game against the Profs.

Swarthmore's regular season comes to a close with 27 wins. That ties the Garnet with the 1985 team for the second most wins in a single season in program history. Last year they shattered the record by going 38-11.
