SWARTHMORE, Pa.—Swarthmore College Men's Tennis, ranked No. 31 nationally, improved to .500 on the season and more importantly, improved to 7-1 in Centennial Conference action with a 6-3 win over Haverford College on Wednesday night.
Wednesday's match was most likely a preview of the first round of the Centennial Conference Tournament. The two teams entered with identical 6-1 league records but Swarthmore separated itself from the Fords to move into the second seed and leave the Fords in the third seed.
The Garnet picked up two wins in doubles play, both by 8-2 scores. Jiung Jung and Noah Criss won second doubles and Simon Vernier and Evan Han won in third doubles. The Garnet nearly won top doubles but fell 8-7, losing in a tiebreaker game 9-7.
Swarthmore earned points in first, second, fifth, and sixth singles. Jung captured the top flight 6-4, 6-1. In the second flight, John Lathrop won 6-3, 7-6 after an 8-6 win in the tiebreaking game.
Criss cruised to his second win of the day by claiming fifth singles 6-1, 6-1. Evan Han's 6-1, 6-2 win in sixth singles rounded out the Garnet performance.
Swarthmore closes out the record season at McDaniel on Friday.
