Game Recap: Baseball |

Corkery Fans 12, Beeker Homers Twice In Garnet Split

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - No. 4-ranked Swarthmore College Baseball began Centennial Conference play on Saturday with a doubleheader split against Washington College.

GAME 1: Swarthmore 11, Washington 3

Junior Jack Corkery continued his amazing start to the season with a 12-strikeout win against the Shoremen. His 12 strikeouts were the most in a game for any Garnet pitcher since at least 2012. He pitched seven innings and didn't walk a single batter, allowing just one earned run. He's now 3-0 this season with a 1.35 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 20 innings pitched. He only has four walks and three extra-base hits allowed.

The Garnet clearly had no shortage of offense in the victory as seven of their 13 hits went for extra bases.

Junior Michael Sepe led the way and mashed his first-career home run. He went 3-for-5 with four RBIs, two runs scored and a double.

Junior Jared Gillen and senior Charles Levitt had two hits and one stolen base apiece.

Every Swarthmore player that batted recorded at least one hit.

GAME 2: Washington 13, Swarthmore 9

This game began as a pitchers' duel as Washington led 1-0 heading into the fifth inning.

Doubles by Gillen, Levitt and sophomore Sam Jacobson gave Swarthmore a 3-1 lead, but the Shoremen bounced back with seven in the bottom of the frame.

Junior Cole Beeker and Jackson Roberts hit back-to-back home runs in the sixth, and Beeker hit another one in the seventh to pull his team within one. Roberts now has three home runs on the season, and he's hit all of them over the past four games to reach 13 for his career. Beeker also has three this season, and he has 10 in his career.

Roberts singled in another run in the ninth, but the Garnet couldn't keep a rally going.

Their next game is at Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pa., on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
