Women's Tennis Upsets No. 12 Bears On Spring Break

LAKE CANE, Fla.—Swarthmore College Women's Tennis upset the No. 12 Washington University in St. Louis Bears 5-4 in Sunday's spring break match.
Just about every match was a closely contested battle. Swarthmore fell in top singles on a 7-3 tiebreaker, but Elise Talley and Christina Wang won second doubles in the tiebreaker game 8-6.

Swarthmore's Emma Kassan and Vivien Fernandez-Ravelo worked together for an 8-6 win in the third doubles flight.

Up 2-1 going into singles play, Swarthmore freshman Sonia Varma gutted out a 6-3, 4-6, 12-10 win in first singles. In second singles, Kassan split the first two sets 6-3, 3-6, but fell 10-8 in the super tiebreaker. Wang's fifth singles match also went to a super tiebreaker but she fell 10-6.

Talley won her the sixth singles first set 7-5 but dropped the second set 6-4. She rallied to win the super tiebreaker 10-8.

Fernandez-Ravelo was the only Garnet singles win to go two sets. She smoked her opponent 6-1 in the first set of fourth singles and fought her off in the second set, winning the tiebreaker game 7-4.

Swarthmore has one more match in sunny Florida. The Garnet face Millsaps College (former program of Swarthmore men's tennis head coach Jason Box) in Orlando at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
