SWARTHMORE, Pa.—No. 1 Swarthmore College Men's Basketball improved to 6-0 after out-muscling the visiting Arcadia University Knights 89-72 on Sunday afternoon.
Swarthmore wrangled up 41 rebounds while limiting Arcadia to 29 on the night; for the season, the Garnet have been out-rebounding opponents by 10.5 boards per game.
Five different players scored in double figures for Swarthmore. Junior Conor Harkins had his best game of the season, cashing in on 6-of-10 attempts from 3-point range to finish with a game-high 18 points in 19 minutes off the bench.
George Visconti knocked down all five of his free-throw attempts to go along with four field goals for 13 points. Colin Shaw added 13 as well and went 3-for-3 from long distance.
Nate Shafer posted 12 points, eight rebounds and four blocks. Justin Tucker connected on both of his 3-pointers and all four of his free throws en route to a 10-point game.
Michael Caprise chipped in seven points, six rebounds and two blocks.
Zac O'Dell finished in single digits for the first time this season, but had five points, six rebounds and three blocks.
The Garnet only trailed for 18 seconds of Sunday's game after Arcadia scored after the opening tip. A triple by Ryan Ingram gave Swarthmore an 18-7 lead with 13:04 to play in the first, the team's first double-digit lead.
Arcadia took advantage 20 free-throw attempts in the first half to hang around long enough for it to be a two-possession game at multiple points in the period. Swarthmore, meanwhile, took just one free throw in the half. The Garnet were able to keep some distance with scorching shooting from 3-point range. Swarthmore sank 7-of-11 attempts from deep (63.6 percent) in the first half.
The Garnet shot 51.7 percent from the floor for the whole game and even better from 3-point range, 54.5 percent. The 3-point output is the team's best performance this season. Swarthmore's defense continued to stifle opponents and force bad shots. Opponents are shooting just 37.1 percent from the floor against Swarthmore this year. Arcadia was below that average, with a 35.6 percent mark.
With 13 minutes left in the game, Swarthmore pulled away with an 11-0 run that put them up 66-47. A triple from Harkins with eight minutes remaining bumped Swarthmore's lead to 20.
Swarthmore is back in conference play on Wednesday at 6 p.m. when the Garnet travel to Ursinus College.
