Women's Soccer Shuts Out Muhlenberg

SWARTHMORE, Pa.--A three-goal second half outburst from Swarthmore College Women's Soccer lifted the Garnet past the visiting Muhlenberg College Mules 3-0 on Wednesday.

Three different Garnet players found the back of the net in the contest: Alice Onyango-Opiyo, Megan Ruoff and Maddy Carens. Swarthmore asserted itself offensively, tallying 25 total shots and 12 on goal. Swarthmore's midfield and defense stifled the Mules, holding them to six total attempts. Four of those shots were on goal, but goalkeeper Chantal Reyes kept the visitors off the board for her sixth shutout of the year.

After a scoreless first half, Swarthmore got a jolt in the second from freshman Onyango-Opiyo who made her first start as a center back and scored her first collegiate goal. The Garnet earned a corner kick from the right side in the 52nd minute. Ruoff served the ball in and found Onyango-Opiyo who chipped the shot high and over the visiting keeper for the score.

Less than three minutes later, Swarthmore scored again on a set piece following a Muhenberg foul in the center of the field behind the 18. Sydney Covitz faked that she was taking the kick and after she stepped over it, Ruoff followed up and crushed the kick in for her third goal of the season.

The Garnet added one more strike for good measure as Carens connected with her second tally of the year on a laser into the top left corner of the net.

Swarthmore (11-5 overall, 5-4 Centennial Conference) will play its final regular season game of the year on Saturday at noon at Haverford. The Garnet were eliminated from playoff contention after Gettysburg upset Johns Hopkins on Wednesday evening.
