SWARTHMORE, Pa.—Swarthmore College Men's Soccer secured three more points in the Centennial Conference standings with a critical 2-1 win over the visiting Washington College Shoremen. The Garnet now sit in fourth place in the Centennial Conference with a 4-3-2 league record (11-2-3 overall).
With just one game to play, Swarthmore is in control of its playoff destiny. A tie with or a win over Haverford on Saturday and the Garnet are in as the fourth seed. If the Garnet lose Saturday, they could still get in with some help, needing Gettysburg to lose or tie against Ursinus.
Swarthmore is jockeying for its first playoff appearance since 2015.
On Wednesday, the Garnet recognized seniors Oliver Steinglass, Zach Viscusi, Trevor Homstad, Felix Laniyan, Quentin Millette, Joey Bradley and Omri Gal.
Steinglass went the full 90 minutes in goal and only allowed one goal while recording one save.
The Garnet were the first to hang a number on the scoreboard. After tallying six first-half shots, Swarthmore broke through early in the second half. Less than two minutes into the new period, Joe Barile danced to the goal line on the right side, opposite his often lethal left side, and slid a pass up top to Woojin Shin just inside the 18. Shin cranked a one-timer into the right upper 90 for his fifth goal of the season.
Washington responded with a tally in the 54th minute for the equalizer.
Homstad netted his fifth marker as well in the 60th minute. A takedown in the box of Gal set up a penalty kick opportunity of Homstad. He drove a low shot into the bottom left pocket and is now 3-for-3 on PKs this season.
Washington only managed three shots the rest of the way and none of them on goal.
The Garnet look to lock up the fourth seed in the playoffs at Haverford on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
