CHESTERTOWN, Md.—Swarthmore College Women's Soccer picked up a 1-0 road conference win on Wednesday night at Washington College. Freshman midfielder Nikki Gibbons booted in the game-winner from long distance in the 81st minute to secure the win for the Garnet.
Swarthmore rattled off 21 shots while limiting Washington to just six attempts. Four of Washington's chances were on frame and sophomore goalkeeper Chantal Reyes turned them all away. Reyes collected her third shutout of the season in the process and lowered her goals against average to a miserly 0.31.
The Garnet got to the corner five times in the game and kept the Shorewomen away from the corner flag for the whole game.
Maddy Carens and Brittany Weiderhold each posted a team-leading three shots but it was Gibbons off the bench who found paydirt. In the 81st minute, after a throw-in on the right side, Gibbons muscled her way to winning the ball from her opponent and then cranked a shot from about 30 yards away that sailed over the keeper and dipped in for the game's lone goal.
Swarthmore, now 7-3 and 2-2 in league play hosts Franklin & Marshall College on Saturday at 4 p.m. as part of Garnet Weekend.
